Pepper has been determinedly sitting on other people's eggs for a couple of weeks now. She would happily spend the whole day in the nest box. When the other eggs are laid though, I chuck her out.

She then squawks at me and sits tight on the run floor for a few minutes. Then when she realises the house door has been shut, she admits it's a fair cop and rushes to the feeders to tank up furiously on pellets and water. At this point, when I'm home, I let them out into their own (fenced) bit of the garden and she enjoys scratching and stuffing her beak in there with the others. She's such a little thing too and only laid for a few weeks before going on strike to go broody. Two of the older hens seem to have reached the Henopause so we aren't getting a whole lot of eggs just now!

I was wondering how your chooks were getting on, I hope all's well in the henhouse now.
She is a pretty girl! What breed is she?
She's a hybrid Black, Phoebe. I think it's Rhode Island Red and Plymouth Rock cross but I wouldn't swear to that.
Yes Ali, all seem settled at the moment. Topaz had a course of antibiotics which turned her back into a raging tyrant again! Garnet looked a bit iffy a couple of weeks back and didn't seem to be eating much so I took her out once a day for a mash with a few treats in which she wolfed down. Now she's in the trough with the rest of them. You often never know what the problem was.
Hullo lady! Hope everything has settled down now. We said goodbye to a manhen today. Was so disappointed she was actually masquerading as a she...I really wanted a bantam araucana, they are so hard to get here.
Hi Mrs Bok. Never had the problem with a manhen. The hybrids I have can be sexed at birth so there's never that 'I wonder if' moment!
So glad that the girls have recovered and all in well at Beak Towers
My little flock of 12 are month old and starting to develop different little personalities. They now have the full run of the coop but the brooder lamp is still running. I'm building a secure run for them so they will be able to come out in the wide world soon.
